11/17 CAREER SERVICES MEETING

COMMENT TO THESE TO GET CREDIT FOR THE MEETING!!!!
Matt Berndt- communication career services director in CMA 3rd floor mon-Friday 8-5

Lots of info on their website: resumes, cover letters, etc.
Create an account with them to be able to make an appointment, drop ins or make an appointment

Graduate school is huge investment of time money and energy. Important for your next step to make sense for you at that time. Must be able to answer: what do you hope to achieve by going to Grad school? why do you want to go? Study? What are primary motivators for going? Helps find program that will meet your needs.

Bad reasons to apply: need grad degree to be successful, bad economy, mom and dad want you to be, a grad degree will help decide what you want to do, will make you more marketable, want to learn more stuff

Good reasons to apply: masters degree required, want to teach and do research,
What can advanced degree do for you?- Can influence how fast and far you can advance your career, give greater flex to change careers, help make career path change, job satisfaction, salary
Not sure what you want to do, don’t rush into grad program, taking off yr can help you get recharged and more motivated and confident about your studies, work experience can help chance of acceptance, gain skills you didn’t get from undergrad.

You must tell grad school about yourself. What will you bring to table? How will you improve their program? No real limit to length of academic resume

When considering a grad school: is it geographically where you want to be? Investigate depts and their areas of expertise, review research journals from that school in your area of interest, dept and their success rates- ask about outcomes, successes; think for yourself- make up your own mind

Criteria for evaluating grad programs- location, competitiveness, length, curriculum, workload, teaching methods, networking, class sizes, class profile, financial aid

Types of degrees- Masters: Terminal: wont help if want to get a doctorate, career advancement to gain specific skills

Tests to take: GRE

when to apply- usually fall for spring application, give professors time for references, preparing your applications, visiting schools/faculty

resources- CCS, Career exploration center, ut office of grad studies, ut grad and international admissions center, annual grad and professional school day
