2-23-10 meeting

BONUS MEETING!!!! NEXT WEEK- March 2: UTD director Jan Lougeay is coming to talk about TSHA and is going to give a free TSHA registration for 1 lucky member PHR 2.108 5pm

Service opportunities: Explore UT- contact Sarah to sign up to work; committee meetings start 2nd week in march for CIKD; forty acres fest

Speaker: Shelly from Austin Speech Labs:
Austin Speech Lab is a nonprofit organization that specializes in affordable stroke rehab
Shelly has been an SLP for 18 yrs. Started Austin Speech Labs 1.5 yrs ago. Provides intensive speech therapy to uninsured, and underinsured stroke victims
Staff: shelly, shilpa and 1 assistant, plus volunteers
Patients come here because they haven’t met their communication goals, they cant communicate effectively enough to return to work
they treat everyone of all ages that have one thing in common: all lost their essential ability to communicate
what they provide: 8 week bootcamps, meet 3 hrs a day, 2-3 days a week for 8 weeks; individual, computer and group therapy- 1 hr each usually
Clients pay 10 dolllars an hr
They write for grants and do fundraising activities to raise funds to help meet their needs
Provide clients with: Intensive therapy, one on one assistance from therapist, structure, accountability, support, new computer based therapy programs, hope, a place to go where others understand them, opportunities to speak without being interrupted, chances to try and try again, affordable therapy
Undergrad volunteers- 10 this semester, contact them if interested mwf or tth 9-12; what you will do- sit and help the client during group and computer therapy, and then work with them for 30 min yourself
Spicewood springs and mopac location- open 9-12pm
haven’t ever had to turn anyone away
14 clients as of right now
she has worked with everyone but felt like aphasics were the ones that were getting left behind, do some swallowing therapy, they focus on language and cognition
advice: try lots of things so you know what you want to focus on as an SLP
Went to Baylor grad and undergrad; did CFY at a school for autistic children using facilitated communication
Get clinical hours for working here, need these for getting certification

  1. I am very excited to hear the lady from UTD come and speak next week. Austin speech labs sounds amazing and it is something I would love to look into volunteering for. Wish I could have made the meeting.
