Spring 2015 First Meeting

Welcome back NSSLHA members and a big hello to all of you new members! Today kicked off the first meeting of the spring semester and we have a lot of events planned for the upcoming weeks, including TSHA info. Here's a recap of today and don't forget to comment to have your attendance accounted for :)

FAQs and Membership Requirements

  • Regular attendance is mandatory - either by signing in at meetings or commenting on the blog
  • In order to be considered active, you must pay dues and have at least 7 points (2 social, 2 fundraising, 2 service and 1 misc.) for the semester
  • Online members have the same requirements and are expected to comment on the blog for attendance to be marked
  • If you did not pay dues last semester, please pay $25 to Andrea at our next meeting. She will also be arranging outside times to meet and I will post that information separately on the blog.
  • Signing up for events is a commitment and failure to show for a shift or not advise an officer 24 hours prior to an event that you will not be attending will result in a point deduction. Please keep this in mind when signing up for events.
Service
Valentine's Day Cards: We are making Valentine's Day Cards for the kids at the clinic here on campus. This Friday, February 13, is the deadline to turn these in at the clinic with Kim (located in the basement of the CMA). Please make sure to sign in with her to have your points counted. The first names of the kiddos will be provided below.

Shaelin, Landon, George, Diego, Jaime, Anderson, Aiden, Tevion, Connor, Max, Jack, Sarah, Josegael, Joshua, Enzo, Lux, Jackie, Asher, Asa, Jayden, Luke, Adam, Jennifer, William, Ron, Owen

Stickers to Gabby: If you haven't seen the post on our Facebook page yet, we are sending stickers and cards to a boy in Washington for his ninth birthday. The card can either be birthday related or Valentine's day themed. The deadline to turn these in will be this Friday so please make sure to turn these in to Gabby by then.

Clinic Clean Up: This event is currently scheduled for this Friday at 9am but it is subject to change. Meet at the UT Speech and Hearing Clinic (basement of the CMA) to help tidy up the clinic.

Austin Speech Labs: Our partnership with ASL, a nonprofit organization that provides therapy for individuals who have suffered a stroke, will be continuing this semester. An email has already been sent out and posted on our Facebook with the sign up link, which includes day and time shifts, so please make sure to fill that out so we can accommodate carpooling. Orientation will be taking place next Tuesday and Wednesday in the evening so as to not interfere with your class schedules. As a part of our partnership, we will also be helping with Amplify Austin in order to raise some money. Please contact Diana Mendoza if you have further questions about ASL.

If you are looking to volunteer somewhere else where officers aren't regularly present, such as Capitol School of Austin, please make sure to go to the Volunteer Sign-Off Sheet tab up top and print out the sheet provided.

Fundraising
Jamba Juice Gift Cards: Cards are $10 dollars each and we keep half of the profit. This is more convenient and they are available to use whenever. If you are interested in purchasing one, sign-ups will be going out soon and you must pay by the end of February/first week of March.

Social
Playland Skate Center: Get excited! We will be going to Adult Night on February 24th to skate and have a fun night out. A google spreadsheet will be posted as the date approaches if you are interested in attending. Cost is $8 and the location is 8822 McCann Drive. We will be carpooling from Littlefield Fountain that night at 7:30. Please be prompt.

Miscellaneous
Explore UT: Volunteers are needed on March 7th from 11am-5pm to help answer general questions about our field and to hand out brochures with more thorough information. Volunteers will receive a
FREE Explore UT shirt. Sign up via this google doc for a one hour shift:
UT Austin Student Academy of Audiology: This is an audiologist panel discussion on different types of audiologists, experiences in the field, and a chance to answer any questions students may have. This will take place February 20, 11:30am-12:30pm on campus at UTC 3.112. Please arrive by 11:15 and make sure to take a picture of the event and email it to Lindsey at lfoo@utexas.edu to receive your point!

AudiologyNOW!: National Audiology Conference taking place March 25-28th in San Antonio. Cost for student members is $45. If you are interested, here is a link with more info.

We're going to TSHA!!
TSHA is the annual speech-language, hearing association convention and it's being held in San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center this year. TSHA will take place at the end of Spring Break, March 19-21. NSSLHA is staying at the hotel the nights of the 20th and 21st (Thursday and Friday). This convention is a great way to network with other professionals in CSD, explore graduate school options, learn about current research, and experience the world of CSD in a great setting! The costs to attend differ based on fall points and active memberships.
ACTIVE MEMBERS: Registration and hotel will be paid for by NSSLHA. Please bring money for dinner, Riverwalk spending, TSHA shoppe, and gas costs for the driver.
INACTIVE MEMBERS: Registration is $60 but this gives you TSHA membership. If you will be spending the night at the hotel with NSSLHA, the cost is $50 per night/$100 total. Please bring money for dinner, Riverwalk spending, TSHA shoppe, and gas costs for the driver.

Registration, forms, and payment are due MARCH 3RD. If you are unsure or have conflicting plans due to spring break, please do not sign up. We have to plan accordingly and accommodate those who will be attending. An email concerning sign ups and other information has already been sent out so please make sure to look it over and email Tyler with any questions you may have.

That's all for now! See you at our next meeting, February 24th :)
