Meet The Professors

The Professors:
Dr. Courtney Byrd: Originally from Manhattan. She teaches the Intro to Assessment and Treatment in Child Language Disorders. This is her 4th year at UT. Research interests- the combined contribution of linguistic processing and motor planning to the onset, development and maintenance of childhood stuttering . there are clinical research opportunities with her. Something embarrassing about her- she forgot one of her sons when she dropped off the other at day care.

Dr. Barbara Davis: Originally from Texas. She teaches Infant Toddler Assessment Intervention, doctoral seminar and used to teach Speech Science in undergrad. She was the graduate advisor here at UT. She has been at UT for 17 yrs. Research- how kids learn to use speech sounds to form English. She loves to go scuba diving.

Dr. Joyce Harris: Originally from Pittsburg,PA. She teaches Sociocultural Bases of Communication in Undergrad, Acquired Language Disorders in Graduate Program. This is her 9th yr at UT as professor. Previously at University of Memphis for 9yrs. Was a student at UT for doctoral studies. Research- project health beliefs/knowledge for African Americans for American Speech-Language Hearing Association which meets in New Orleans this year. Research- Text comprehension, literacy in adults and adolescents. Her favorite vacation spot is British Columbia, Canada. Favorite Austin eatery- East Side Café. Something no one knows about her- she knows how to spin yarn from wool. Hobbies- likes to cook.

Dr. Doug Sladen: 13 months at UT. originally from British Columbia, Canada. Studied audiology. Research- cochlear implants, children audiology, hearing loss. He teaches Children Audiology, Principles of Audiology. His favorite vacation spot- Vienna.

Dr. Harvey Sussman: originally from New York. He teaches Speech Science and Language in the Brain. Research- project with Dr. Byrd on stuttering. Likes to understand how phonemes are represented in the brain. Something no one knows about him- he taught Dr. Davis and Dr. Harris. He has been at UT since 1970.

Dr. Christine Matyear: she teaches A&P, Foundations of Speech and Hearing. Originally from Minnesota. She has been at UT for 13 yrs. Research- transition from speech to language developing kids. Favorite vacation spot- Greece. Something no one knows about her- she gave herself a black eye while doing martial arts over the weekend.

Dr. Thomas Marquardt: he teaches Intro to CSD, Speech Language Evaluation and Treatment in Adults, Motor Speech Disorders. Originally from Wisconsin. He is the 7th kid out of 8 in his family. He met Dr. Sussman at Wisconsin in grad school. Research- speech motor control problems in damage to left lobe in adults. Hobbies- gardening.

Dr. Dena Granoff: NSSLHA advisor. She teaches Intro to Assessment and Treatment in Communication Disorders in Adults, Dysphasia in graduate program. She has been at UT for 16 yrs. Originally from New Jersey. Favorite vacation spot- anywhere she can explore on a bike.

Dr. Li Sheng: originally from China. She teaches Acquisition of Communication Ablilitiies in Children, Language Disorders in School Age Children, Cognitive Language Development. This is her 3rd yr at UT. Research- effects of individual difference on child vocabulary. Her favorite vacation would be to go home to visit her parents. Her favorite restaurant- Asian Cafe. Something no one knows about her- when she got her 1st paycheck from UT she bought a pair of cowboy boots. Something adventurous she has done-rode in hot air balloon over Napa valley. Likes to shop.

Dr. Chang Liu: originally from China. He teaches Hearing Science. This is his 3rd yr at UT. Research- auditory perception in people with/out hearing loss. Doing a research study on auditory processing in kids with Dr. Davis. Also interested in bilingual speech perception. Favorite vacation spot-Hawaii. Favorite restaurant- Asian Café. Something no one knows about him- he gets nervous about speaking In front of people. Hobbies- play video games, watching sports. Likes to travel.

DUES WERE DUE AT THIS MEETING, BUT YOU HAVE UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY 10-13 TO PAY THEM TO ANY OFFICER. JUST SEND SELINA AN EMAIL SAYING THAT YOU HAVE PAID AN OFFICER YOUR DUES SO SHE KNOWS TO COLLECT THEM FROM THAT OFFICER.
