Speakers from the Capitol School of Austin: Jeanette Young and Karen Bodden
A little history of the Capitol School: it was started in 1990 by Amy Cunningham an SLP, used a church funded by parent tuition and fundraising, originally a preschool setting added kindergarten in 1994 to help the kids with learning disorders as well, goes thru 3rd grade, 2000- horizon was started for kids with autism spectrum disorders 17 teaching staff, 29 members
Programs for preschool and school age, and kids with behavioral or learning problems; 2-8 yrs… but really based on the learning ability of the kids
Preschool- half day except prek
k-3 Academic is whole day
occupational therapy for pe, music therapy for music, drama for older kids, 8-10 kids per class for preschool with 1 teacher and 1 assistant, up to 12 for older
can volunteer- brief orientation, requirement commit to 2 hrs a week and be consistent, let Jeanette know if you are interested, can get observation hrs here, on tues and thurs observation hrs open
summer program- 1 month theme based 4 hrs, camp like helps with language development, can volunteer with this
hire speech pathologists??- they do hire SLPs when a spot becomes available, lots more opportunities for volunteer
teaching certificate??- not required but a lot of the staff do have one, will have to have some training on how to teach subjects/special education
requirements to meet to go to school- application case history and goes to a committee, then 1-3 day visit to see if a good fit, must have a speech language eval, neurology evaluation, kids that are language learning disordered, on a 6 week trial basis
a few examples of the types of disorders that the kids have that go to the Capitol School: receptive expressive language disorder, apraxia, add, aspergers, auditory processing
divide classrooms based on diagnosis??- kids on autism spectrum work better with almost 1-1 setting, but not divided specifically by disorder
advice: as undergrad- expose yourself to typically learning kids to recognize disordered kids, daycares, afterschool programs, babysit; interested in medical route sit in on swallowing studies, shadow speech path to figure out what youre interested in; learn about AAC devices; go to TSHA take advantage of all the opportunities; grad school- get involved in research, interact with patients; practicum sites- try to get a diversity of settings; look for courses in related fields- counseling, therapy, client relationship, reading disorders; begin building referral list for your clients; take part in speech and hearing screenings; grad school advice- keep in touch with others in your field; try to do as much continuing ed as you can; try to look for a cfy where you will get 1 on 1 time with your supervisor
